You remember we told you the city of Burlington was thinking about allowing residents to own chickens again? They banned the birds within the city limits a few years ago after getting complaints from non-chicken owners of the smell and noise. Now though, a lot of folks say the way things have gone downhill with the Governor's lockdown of the economy, they should be allowed so some folks can have the option of making their own eggs and Sunday dinner. The Burlington City Council asked the staff to put together an ordinance. Next month, the council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the idea. Right now, it looks like chicken coops would have to have at least 3 feet of space for each bird and there would have to be a covered space available. The proposed ordinance would also outlaw roosters and turkeys and other birds so forget the peacock or the penguin.
