Officials with Elon University have lost their attempt to amend the Alamance County law enforcement mutual aid agreement. The university tried to add an amendment they said would allow any member to opt out from helping, if they decided helping enforce the law and protecting the community went against the school’s interpretation of social justice. The problem is, Elon University came under criticism last year, for helping enforce the law during some of the protests in downtown Graham. The other members of the mutual aid agreement refused to go along with the Elon amendment. As for those calling on Elon University to simply opt out of the mutual aid agreement, school officials say they might actually need help in the future so they cannot do that. Law enforcement agencies in the mutual aid agreement include Mebane, Haw River, Gibsonville, Graham, Burlington, the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, Alamance County Community College, the Town of Elon and Elon University.
