Muddy Conditions Do Not Slow Patriot Ground Game in 53-12 Victory

GRAHAM – Southern Alamance Football Coach Fritz Hessenthaler emphasizes team accomplishments over individual performances whenever he can.

“This is a team game,” Hessenthaler said. “It takes a lot of effort from a lot of players to score a touchdown and to win a game.”

Those comments came from Hessenthaler after his team secured a dominating 53-12 victory over visiting High Point Central.

Statistically, running backs Korben Hamilton and Braxton Meyers led the Patriots (2-1). Hamilton tallied 129 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

Meyers also carried the ball eight times. He finished with 112 yards and two TDs. He also notched three two-point conversion runs.

“We came into this week knowing it was going to be a dominant run week, and we relied on our guards and our front line to give us the holes we needed,” Hamilton explained. “They did a great job. They gave me and Braxton everything we could want in the run game – a beautiful hole and green grass in front of us.”

That green grass was mostly brown with mud by the end of the game.

“We don’t care what type of field we have to play on,” said Hamilton, a 5-7, 170-pound senior. “We are just here to play and have fun. We handled the slips and slides pretty well tonight, and they (the Bison) didn’t. We made some cuts that they couldn’t, and that enabled us to break some big runs. … It was a great team win.”

Meyers said: “It wouldn’t have happened without the guards. They set us up to be successful.”

Anchoring the front line most of the night for Southern were center Aulden Richardson, left guard Owen Patterson, right guard Devin Brewer, left tackle D.J. Robertson, right tackle Colton Freitas and tight end Wesley Smith.

Fullback Jackson Parrish also provided several lead blocks while tallying 70 yards on four carries as well. Parrish also scored on a 58-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

Southern’s first possession of the game stalled thanks to two incomplete passes. The Patriots then concentrated on the ground game with their second possession and pieced together a nine-play, 63-yard drive for the game’s opening score. That score (Hamilton’s first TD) came with 1:46 to play in the first quarter and gave Southern a lead it would never relinquish.

Southern dominated nearly all phases of the game. In total offense, Southern recorded 414 yards while holding the Bison (1-3) to just 116 yards.

High Point Central showed brief signs of life late in the first half, putting together a five-play, 57-yard scoring drive. Bison quarterback Keith McDuffie connected on three straight passes of 21, 12 and 30 yards on the drive.

For the night, McDuffie was five of seven for 52 yards. However, McDuffie’s offensive line failed to provide protection with enough consistency for High Point to generate much offense via either run or pass. McDuffie recorded 13 carries on the night; six of them went for zero or negative yardage.

In addition to rushing touchdowns from Hamilton (two), Meyers (two) and Parrish (one), Southern quarterback David Hines connected with Cameron McGhee for a 42-yard score and linebacker Jordan Harless scooped up a Bison fumble and ran it in 40 yards for another Patriot TD.

Harless was later carried from the field with what appeared to be a knee injury.

Senior running back Elijah Kennedy recorded both of High Point Central’s scores, first on a 30-yard pass from McDuffie and then on an 18-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.

This game is the only non-conference contest on the Southern schedule. With the win, the Patriots improved to 2-1. They are expected to play twice next week – with a Tuesday make-up game against Southwest Randolph, and a Saturday contest against Eastern Guilford.
